The Slav Defence is a variation of the Queen’s Gambit.

In contrast to the Queen’s Gambit declined, the already open diagonal c8-h3 is not closed by e6, so that a development of the bishop on c8 to f5 or g4 before e6 remains possible. Under certain circumstances, after 2. … c6, Black can successfully try to take the pawn with dxc4.
