The Grünfeld Defense, named after Ernst Grünfeld https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernst_Gruenfeld who introduced it into international play at Vienna 1922, where, in his first game with the defense, he defeated future world champion Alexander Alekhine. It's one of the sharpest responses to the Queen's Gambit.

A multi-purpose move against 1.d4. Black doesn't commit to a specific pawn structure and prevents 2.e4.
